Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine-gauged needles to the appropriate depth at special locations within the body to change the way that energy is flowing within the body. Acupuncture theory holds that energy called Qi (pronounced “chee”) flows throughout the body in predictable ways in conduits called meridians or channels. Channels are connected in an intricate network that covers all parts of the body like the network of roads that serve metropolitan areas, from multi-laned expressways to unpaved alleys. When the normal flow of Qi is interrupted, pain and dysfunction result. Acupuncturists alter the flow of Qi by manipulating small portals (acupoints) via the insertion and manipulation of filiform (solid shaft) needles. The location, number, depth of insertion, and retention time of needles varies from patient to patient and with the type of imbalance being treated.

The selection of acupoints to alter the flow of Qi is an art based on interpretation of data collected via conversation with the patient and observation of the patient by the acupuncturist. At Tipping Point Acupuncture, this data collection process is combined with attention paid to how to best frame the treatment for maximum effect on the patient.
